Citizens United To Protect The Maurice River - Stewardship Workshop: Soil Health and Make-N-Take Compost Bin / 7-16-25
Join CU Maurice River for the next Stewardship Workshop on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at 5:30 pm. Salvatore Mangiafico, Ph.D., Extension Agent with Rutgers Cooperative Extension in Cumberland and Salem Counties, will present on soil health and lead an interactive demonstration on testing soil texture by feel while highlighting the importance of composting for watershed integrity.
Soil texture refers to the proportion of sand, silt, and clay in a soil. This texture influences water holding capacity, infiltration rates and drainage, and nutrient retention. Attendees will also learn how adding organic matter in the form of compost to your soil can improve it, especially those soils high in clay or sand.
Following the presentation, Program Manager Kimberly Spiegel and Master Gardener Susan McKenna will lead the construction of your own starter compost bin to take home.
This event is part of CU Maurice River's Watershed Stewards Designation Program. By participating in this workshop and starting a composting practice, you will be earning points towards either Stream-Friendly or Wildlife-Friendly status. In addition to improving soil health with the nutrient-rich soil amendment that composting creates, it is also an effective way to reduce waste. By transforming organic materials like food scraps and yard waste into compost, you can divert these materials from landfills and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.Dr. Salvatore Mangiafico of the Cumberland County Cooperative Extension Office.
