SJ Transportation Planning Organization Encourages Businesses To Take Transit Study Survey

NJ TRANSIT is studying transit demand and mobility gaps in the counties of Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland, and Salem. The Southern New Jersey Transit Market Study will analyze current and future development and employment patterns to recommend ways to improve connections to jobs, recreation, and vital services. By identifying service gaps and incorporating community input, the study aims to propose innovative, sustainable solutions for the region’s long-term mobility needs.

The study area is home to nearly 600,000 people and economic hubs like Atlantic City, Cape May, Vineland, Wildwood, and various healthcare, manufacturing, and logistics centers. Seasonal travel patterns, dispersed population density, and mobility gaps between key economic centers present transportation challenges different from elsewhere in New Jersey.

Existing public transit in the study area includes fixed-route bus and rail lines as well as services operated by community transportation providers. Whether they are on-demand, fixed-route, or deviated fixed-route, these services are a vital piece of the transportation landscape, particularly for older adults and people with disabilities.

The study will consider existing and emerging models for mobility. Through coordinating with local partners, NJ TRANSIT will identify how innovative models of mobility can enhance, supplement, complement, or replace existing services.

The study began in December 2025 and is scheduled to conclude in 2027. Community engagement will be key to the project's success. NJ TRANSIT will gather the perspectives from people who live, work, and travel to the study area through an online survey and local community events (summer 2026), as well as virtual public meetings (fall 2026).

The Southern New Jersey Transit Market Study is evaluating current and future transit needs throughout South Jersey and will help identify opportunities to improve bus service, address mobility gaps, and better connect residents, employees, students, businesses, and visitors across the region.  Broad participation from the business community will help ensure the study reflects the transportation needs of employers, employees, customers, and the communities that are served.
