Citizens United To Protect The Maurice River - Superfund Site / 4-7-26
Join CU Maurice River to visit the Lipari Landfill Superfund site, once labeled one of the most toxic dumps in the United States and now a powerful example of environmental restoration. After decades of industrial waste contaminating local soil and groundwater the site was added to the EPA’s Superfund National Priorities List, launching a long-term cleanup that included landfill containment, groundwater treatment, and soil remediation.
Removed from the list in 2024, the area has been transformed into community space where Alcyon Lake and surrounding lands now support recreation, wildlife habitat, and healthier natural systems. Efforts like these demonstrate how remediation can restore ecosystem function, improve water quality, and create lasting environmental benefits.
While this outing goes beyond the Maurice River watershed, similar cleanup efforts have occurred locally. Past remediation within the watershed, including the Vineland Chemical Superfund site along the Blackwater Branch, highlights the importance of addressing contamination before it impacts sensitive species and downstream environments like the Wild and Scenic Maurice River. More broadly, restoration efforts like these strengthen ecological systems by improving water quality, reconnecting habitats, and supporting biodiversity. Success stories such as Lipari remind us that repairing damaged landscapes is essential to sustaining healthy, resilient environments for both wildlife and communities.
Participants are encouraged to dress appropriately, as the tour will take place outdoors. Sturdy walking shoes or boots are encouraged.
