Citizens United To Protect The Maurice River - Info Session For Volunteer Community Scientists - Manumuskin Project / 7-9-25
J
Calling all CU Community Scientists!
Are you looking for a way to make a difference for river health this summer? In preparation for the Wild and Scenic Manumuskin River Wetlands Restoration Project, CU Maurice River will be conducting various surveys. As always, we aim to grow awareness by engaging the community in our stewardship, research, management, and restoration projects. This summer three studies will be initiated to capture baseline data before restoration activities begin: a photo point catalogue of fixed viewscapes, a small fish survey, and a GPS flora mapping project. The goal of these studies is to gather data on the habitat and wildlife response to restoration. They will therefore be conducted each summer for the next five years.
If you are interested in lending a hand in restoring the Wild and Scenic Manumuskin River, this is a great way to get involved, to make a difference, and to get out on the river this summer. We invite all volunteers to attend the initial meeting. At this event, you will be given an overview of each of these data collection projects so that you can decide how best to participate. No experience is necessary; however, a willingness to canoe or kayak the river will be important for the flora and fish surveys. The photopoint survey can be conducted from land. If you have a special interest or knowledge of local fish and/or flora, your background could be very useful to the whole group!
This first meeting will take place before CU Maurice River’s next bi-monthly meeting from 5 to 6 pm on Wednesday, July 9, 2025. You can stay on for the business meeting and presentation, which will follow directly.
This project is funded by National Estuaries Program’s Coastal Watershed, a grant awarded to CU Maurice River by Restore America’s Estuaries and funded by the US Environmental Protection Agency.
