Citizens United To Protect The Maurice River - Family-Friendly Friday: Jersey Devil Hunt / 10/17 and 10/24/25
For the final Family-Friendly Friday of the year, CU Maurice River is diving into the heart of New Jersey folklore with a moonlit hunt for the legendary Jersey Devil. The evenings will begin gathered around a campfire at the southern edge of the Pine Barrens, a landscape steeped in mystery and natural wonder. As the fire crackles, enjoy roasted hot dogs and marshmallows (vegan options available), accompanied by live piney folk music from CU member Tom McKee and Russell Juelg.
Russell Juelg, Senior Land Steward with the New Jersey Conservation Foundation, will lead participants into the tales and lore that have haunted these woods for over two centuries. After the stories, participants will slip into the night and onto the trail, surrounded by towering pines and the quiet hum of the forest. With no flashlights or headlamps allowed, we’ll rely on our senses to search for signs, sounds, and maybe even a glimpse of the Jersey Devil himself. What will we discover on this October night in one of New Jersey’s most storied landscapes? Join CU Maurice River to find out!
Be Prepared
Please be aware that participants will take part in a walk through the forest, illuminated only by moonlight. Wear appropriate clothes and comfortable walking shoes. There may be areas of uneven ground and low-hanging branches. Please bring a chair and roasting stick for the campfire.Date and Time
