Citizens United To Protect The Maurice River - CU Saturday: Bayshore Walk / 4-18-26

Explore the early signs of spring along the Delaware Bay, guided by Dr. Larry Niles and Dr. Amanda Dey in partnership with the Downe Township Green Team. Spring migration is one of nature’s most extraordinary phenomena, driven by changing daylight and seasonal food availability as birds travel thousands of miles to reach Arctic breeding grounds. The Delaware Bay serves as a globally significant stopover, where shorebirds such as red knots, ruddy turnstones, and sanderlings refuel on horseshoe crab eggs before continuing their journey. Participants may also encounter diamondback terrapins emerging with the warmer weather, along with a variety of coastal birds and other seasonal indicators.
Members of the Downe Township Green Team will share insights into their local conservation initiatives, including the award-winning Turtle Patrol, while CU Maurice River highlights programs such as reTURN the Favor and Feeding the Scientists. This guided outing highlights the extensive research, conservation efforts, and collaborative initiatives led by scientists and community stewards to better understand and protect the Bayshore region, offering participants a deeper appreciation for the work being done to sustain these vital coastal ecosystems.
Bring your binoculars or a scope if you have one, as well as snacks and water to stay refreshed during the day. Dress appropriately for the weather; wearing sturdy, waterproof boots is suggested.
