Citizens United To Protect The Maurice River - Eagle Trail Walk / 1-18-25
Join CU Maurice River naturalists for the first outing of 2025, the Eagle Trail Walk. Experience the winter vistas of the Glades Wildlife Refuge on a guided trek. Along the way, the team will share insights into the bald eagle's incredible recovery, explore the vital role volunteers have played, and highlight other natural wonders and Down Jersey natural values of national significance.
Every January, CU Maurice River coordinates this walk to celebrate the impressive resurgence of bald eagles in the region. Once on the brink of extinction, the bald eagle was listed as federally endangered in 1978, with only one active nest in the area at that time. Thanks to years of dedicated conservation efforts, the bald eagle was delisted from the endangered species list in 2007.
According to the 2023 NJDEP Fish and Wildlife New Jersey Bald Eagle Project Report, 286 nest sites are now monitored, with 255 being active (an increase of 5 nests from 2022) and produced 309 young. The Delaware Bay region has become a crucial stronghold for eagle recovery, with nearly half of all nests found in Cumberland, Salem, and Cape May counties. Cumberland County, in particular, leads the state with the highest number of bald eagle nests.
