Once on the brink of extinction\, the bald eagle was listed as federally endangered in 1978\, with only one active nest in the area at that time. Thanks to years of dedicated conservation efforts\, the bald eagle was delisted from the endangered species list in 2007.\n\n\n\nAccording to the 2023 NJDEP Fish and Wildlife New Jersey Bald Eagle Project Report\, 286 nest sites are now monitored\, with 255 being active (an increase of 5 nests from 2022) and produced 309 young. The Delaware Bay region has become a crucial stronghold for eagle recovery\, with nearly half of all nests found in Cumberland\, Salem\, and Cape May counties.
