Join wildlife biologist Emmy Casper from Conserve Wildlife Foundation NJ for a tour of restored local habitats that are vital for the protection of the endangered eastern black rail. This species has faced significant population declines due to habitat loss, particularly from the filling and polluting of coastal wetlands. As a result, their breeding sites along New Jersey’s Atlantic and Delaware Bay coasts have diminished drastically.
The marshes of the Maurice River, rich in food resources, provide critical habitat for threatened species like the black rail. Conservation efforts such as this project work to restore these vital marshlands, ensuring that the necessary resources for these species are once again available and protected. Healthy marshes are a cornerstone of biodiversity, supporting not only the black rail but also many other species in need of secure habitats. By preserving these areas, we help ensure that these ecosystems continue to thrive for generations to come.
Come out to tour restored areas with Emmy and other experts to learn how projects like this are selected, as well as understanding the obstacles and successes encountered along the way.
Dress appropriately for the weather and wear sturdy walking shoes or boots. Bringing a snack and water is suggested.
