Citizens United To Protect The Maurice River - Siloam Cemetery Tour / 6-21-25

Discover the rich history of Vineland at the upcoming CU Saturday: Siloam Cemetery Tour, a guided walk through one of the city’s most historic sites. Founded in 1864 by Charles K. Landis, the cemetery is not only his final resting place but also includes the graves of many influential figures such as naturalist Mary Treat and suffragist Portia Gage. These individuals helped shape the cultural landscape of the Maurice River region, whose nationally recognized Wild and Scenic River designation honors not only its natural beauty but also the legacy of those who contributed to its vibrant social and historical identity.

Led by Chris Mohan of the Siloam Cemetery Association’s Board of Trustees, the tour will highlight the lives of these notable residents and the cemetery’s unique architectural features.  Participants will explore key landmarks, including the 1885 receiving vault, the double-arched Gothic granite gateway from 1900, a granite and iron fence added in 1902, and a striking Gothic Revival chapel built in 1918. This event offers a compelling look into Vineland’s past through the stories of its founders, reformers, and everyday citizens—voices that continue to echo through the Maurice River corridor.
