Join CU Maurice River for a special edition of Family-Friendly Friday—a hands-on evening of scientific exploration as part of the Dragonfly Mercury Project! This nationally recognized study enlists community scientists across the country to collect dragonfly larvae, which are used to monitor mercury levels in ecosystems.
Kids and adults alike will have the chance to wade into local waters, collect dragonfly larvae, and learn how these aquatic insects help us track mercury pollution. While dragonfly sampling is always open to all ages, this evening prioritizes family involvement—so bring your curiosity, your water shoes, and your sense of adventure. It’s a great way to connect with nature, contribute to real environmental research, and make lasting memories outdoors.
Quick-dry synthetic clothing and water shoes (not sandals) need to be worn; expect to get wet. Wading in the water up to your knees, or higher, is likely. Life jackets will be required at all times while in the water. However, there are also important jobs for a few community scientists who might feel more comfortable on land. Insect repellent and sunscreen are highly recommended for this outing as well as an ample amount of drinking water. CU Maurice River has a limited number of life jackets for participants to borrow so if you have your own, please bring it with you.
