Citizens United To Protect The Maurice River - Eagle Trail Walk / 1-24-26

Join CU Maurice River for its Annual Eagle Trail Walk, the first outing of 2026. Take a winter hike through the Glades Wildlife Refuge alongside a team of CUMR naturalists. While exploring the trail, you’ll learn about NJDEP's Eagle Project and the remarkable recovery of this species. Many CUMR volunteer community scientists were involved in observing eagle nests, playing a vital role in management efforts.

According to the 2024 NJDEP Fish and Wildlife New Jersey Bald Eagle Project Report, 264 nest sites were active, and 288 young were documented to have fledged. The Delaware Bay region remains a crucial stronghold for bald eagle recovery, with Cumberland, Salem, and Cape May counties supporting nearly half of the state's nests. Cumberland County continues to lead the state with the highest number of bald eagle nests, underscoring the importance of protecting this iconic species and the habitats it depends on.

Each January, this walk celebrates the incredible rebound of bald eagles in the area. Once on the brink of extinction, the bald eagle was federally listed as endangered in 1978, with only one active nest in the area. Thanks to decades of dedicated conservation efforts, the species was removed from the federal endangered list in 2007 and from New Jersey's list in 2025.

Please wear sturdy walking shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. Waterproof boots are suggested, as the trail often floods. Consider bringing water and binoculars along with you.
