| Join CU Maurice River on Thursday, April 2, at 6:30 pm for the April CU Social. This month's speaker, Mark Demitroff, will highlight the Wild and Scenic Maurice River’s maritime commerce and how it was driven by the freightage of forest products from the hinterland. Vast stands of pine, oak, and white cedar supplied massive quantities of lumber, charcoal, and naval stores (turpentine, pitch, resin, rosin) that needed to be brought to market. This presentation will tell the story of how forest products made the Tidewater land a busy regional hub for shipbuilding and boatbuilding. Mark Demitroff is an adjunct professor in the Geology Department at Stockton University, where he focuses on periglacial geomorphology. Having twice served on the board of the U.S. Permafrost Association, Demitroff also sits as a board member of Stockton’s South Jersey Culture & History Center. In addition he is the author of Soggy Ground: A Geography of Pine Barrens Wetlands, where his research illustrates the impact of place on the socio-cultural history of a region. If you'd like to have dinner at Merighi's, it is recommended that you make a reservation for either before the presentation at 5 pm. or afterwards at 8 pm. To reserve, please call the restaurant at 856-691-8051. |
