CU's Wildlife-Friendly Designation recognizes residents who implement best management practices. Awardees are making a concerted effort to promote healthy habitat in the Maurice River Watershed by reducing the amount of water they withdraw from the Kirkwood-Cohansey Aquifer and minimizing the quantity of non-point source pollution stemming from their property. They also manage their yards and acreage to create a stopover or link for wildlife between preserved natural areas. These stewards accomplish this by providing a natural landscape that supports native plant communities and offers wildlife these three essentials: food, shelter, and water.
In this stewardship workshop led by Wild Birds Unlimited (Cherry Hill), you will learn about different options for providing nest boxes and nesting materials for various species of backyard birds. You'll also have the opportunity to make and take a wren house home. One of the categories to qualify your property for a Wildlife-Friendly Designation is "installing, maintaining, and monitoring avian nesting boxes." Certain species of birds such as bluebirds, chickadees, and wrens will only nest in cavities, and providing them with nest boxes in your yard can contribute to their generational success.
