YMCA offers Diabetes Classes
Nationally and locally, fighting diabetes is an important health concern. The Cumberland Cape Atlantic YMCA/YMCA of Vineland offers at no cost a Diabetes Prevention Program to address this issue. This is a year long program that gives participants the skills and support they need to make lasting healthy lifestyle changes and avoid diabetes. A new class is slated to begin on Monday, July 10 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The class will include sixteen weekly sessions and three sessions every other week followed by six monthly sessions, for a total of twenty-five meetings.
Pamela Heaton is the Y’s Diabetes Prevention coordinator. She said, “People with prediabetes might not show any symptoms, though the condition is terribly common.”
She continues, “To qualify for this program, participants must be at least eighteen years old, overweight, and at risk for developing diabetes or diagnosed with prediabetes. We offer a quick quiz that can tell people if they are at risk.”
The individual sessions will include topics such as “Be a Fat Detective,” “You Can Manage Stress,” “Tip the Calorie Balance,” and many more. The major goals include reducing body weight and increasing physical activity.
For more information, please call Heaton at (856)691-0030, extension 118.
