"EXTRA BOLD" Graphic Design For Social Justice - Nov. 1 - 30, 2019
New exhibition features graphic design for social justice
“Extra Bold,” curated by Judy Livingston, showcases the power of graphic design for social justice. The focus on typography plays a significant role in the many interpretations of this theme. “Extra Bold” pushes the boundaries of symbols and letters as form, and finding strength, beauty and understanding in a shared visual language. The exhibit includes posters and typographic works by designers who use their language of vision as activists for positive societal change.
International designers whose work will be on view include: Ginette Caron (Ginette Caron Communication Design), Armando Milani (Milani Design) and Carlotta Origoni (Origoni Steiner Studio) from Italy. Other participants are: Jan Conradi (Rowan University), Sherri Baker Hamilton (creative manager, Wegmans Food Markets), Judy Livingston (owner, “Good Work Good Cause”), Josh MacPhee (founder, “Justseeds” international cooperative), and Chaz Maviyane-Davies, whom Debbie Millman of “Design Matters” described as “one of the most powerful voices in the world of graphic design.” This group of designers strives to cut through complacency and apathy.
The public is welcomed to a free gallery talk on Thursday, Nov. 14, beginning at 4 p.m. An artist reception is set to take place 6-9 p.m. on Nov. 15 during the Third Friday festivities in Millville’s Glasstown Arts District.
Gallery hours are: 9 a.m-9 p.m. Monday-Friday; and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday. For more information, call 856-765-0988.
