Citizens United To Protect The Maurice River - CU Saturday: Lichen Walk / 11-15-25

Join CU Maurice River and NJDEP’s Jason Hafstad for a hands-on exploration of lichens at the Manumuskin Preserve. During this guided walk, participants will trade binoculars for microscopes as they take a closer look at these often-overlooked but ecologically-vital organisms. Found on trees, rocks, and soil, lichens are a unique symbiotic relationship between algae and fungi. These organisms work together to survive in challenging environments, and their intricate forms and vibrant colors offer a fascinating glimpse into the complexity of the natural world.
Beyond their beauty, lichens play an important role as indicators of air quality and ecosystem health. Because they absorb all their nutrients from the atmosphere, lichens are highly sensitive to pollutants such as nitrogen. Changes in their composition can signal environmental stress long before it becomes visible in other species. Come out and join us for a unique opportunity to learn about these remarkable organisms and their role in protecting the places we love.
Dress appropriately for the weather and wear sturdy walking shoes or boots. Use of sunscreen and insect repellent is recommended. Be sure to bring plenty of water and a snack.
