She specializes in the study of the echinoderms - sea urchins\, sea cucumbers\, and sea stars. \n\n Hailing from Brazil\, Dr. Alves Souto has her undergraduate degree in Biology and an MS in Zoology from the University of Bahia. She received her PhD in Integrative Biology from the University of California\, Berkeley. As a researcher she studies specimens in museum collections around the world and studies live organisms in various marine ecosystems worldwide.\n\n\n\nHer projects are driven by her curiosity and interest in understanding the processes that have shaped the evolution of marine life over millions of years\, i.e. how did animals survive extinctions\, how and where they live\, and how they are managing to stay alive in today's world.
